(FOX Providence) - When it's sunny outside, sunglasses are the key to protecting our eyes from dangerous UV rays. But does the price of sunglasses mean better protection from the sun?

Susan Hogan joined the Rhode Show to give us a sneak peak of her story revealing which sunglasses are the best for your eyes.

In most cases, your paying for the brand name and sunglasses these days are a fashion statement, and designers know many people would spend a couple of hundred dollars just to have a certain label.

Susan went shopping and bought several pairs of sunglasses, ranging in price from $5 -$140. She brought them to a registered optician with the Rhode Island Eye Institute where the sunglasses were measured to see just how much UV light was passing through.

They all claim to offer 100% UV protection, so the number should be 0. But, the results may actually surprise you!

Susan said if you are buying sunglasses from a well known store, with a well known brand, chances are the claim is true. But to be sure, they can always go to an optician. Most have these meters that read the UV output.

Also remember, children's sunglasses are also extremely important.
You should always make sure they have 100 percent UV protection.

Find out what which sunglass claims stand up and which ones fall short on Eyewitness News Live at 5:30.
