Sunglasses are a great accessory and a great gift. They look cool. They're functional. And unless that big ball of fire in the sky suddenly disappears, they're always relevant.

The one downside to most sunglasses is that they're very simple. Whether it's noon or midnight, they're dark and and this can cause visibility issues. Photochromic lenses help, but there's still a lot of room for improvement.

Working within that room, start-up Dynamic Eye has made the most techy pair of sunglasses we've ever seen. Instead of just a tinting lens, Dynamic Eyes system uses a camera to analyze incoming light and LCD lenses to adjust tint based upon the light conditions. And these sunglasses aren't all or nothing like photochromic lenses–they darken in the specific parts that are affected by the incoming sunlight. This way you're still able to see everything else clearly, but the sunlight is effectively blocked. It's a pretty cool solution if a little over-teched and impractical for a pair of eyewear.

Unfortunately, no matter how bad you hound shopping-mall Santas, you won't be getting these this Christmas. They're still in experimental stages and aren't quite ready for market. If you want to get them to market faster, though, you can pledge your hard-earned money to help fund the project and reserve one of the first pairs at the same time. [via CrunchGear]
